One Additional Thing I Learned About My Dad Only After Becoming a Parent

Disclaimer: This is a personal diary

Since working at Habyt around September last year, I have been traveling quite frequently, at least every 4-5 weeks to visit Singapore or sometimes Hong Kong office. It is something I am excited about considering I have been working from home since March 2020. However, the more I travel and go to the airport, the less excited I am towards the packing, commute, waiting, check-in, boarding, etc.

I always feel that during travel, at least 2-3 hours of my productive time is lost due to pre- and post-flight travel (not including the flight time). Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to meet my peers in person. I wish I can travel within seconds to their office :))

All this travel made me wonder how my dad did it when I was a child. I remember clearly that he traveled more frequently than I do, sometimes even making a round trip within the same day AND he always bring something home for me and my sisters. We always waited him to arrive home, even if it meant waiting until 11pm (for an 8yo it’s late!).

Now that I have 3yo daughter, I try to emulate what he did, but I just cannot find the time to buy something during the trip. Considering that I am working in a startup which is more flexible in nature and he worked at Sony (you can imagine the Japanese culture), it means he always spent the time to buy something for us.

That realisation makes me feel very grateful to have such father, and it will be my standard from now on. I know we rarely talked heart to heart openly. I guess this is one of his way to convey love to his children. For that, I will always be grateful.
